Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 cup warm whole milk (about 110°F or 43°C)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 3 1/4 cups bread flour, plus extra as needed
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt

For the egg wash:

  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon whole milk

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy, indicating that the yeast is active.
  2. Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the bread flour, sweetened condensed milk, egg, softened butter, and salt. Add the yeast mixture. Using the dough hook attachment or by hand, knead the mixture until a smooth and elastic dough forms, approximately 8 minutes with a mixer or 12 minutes by hand. If the dough is too sticky, add additional flour, one tablespoon at a time, until it becomes manageable.

  3. First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free area for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  4. Shape the Dough: After the first rise, punch down the dough to release any air bubbles. Shape it into a loaf or divide it into equal portions to form rolls. Place the shaped dough into a greased loaf pan or baking dish.

  5. Second Rise: Cover the shaped dough and let it rise again for 30-45 minutes, or until slightly puffed.

  6. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  7. Apply Egg Wash: In a small bowl, mix together the beaten egg and milk. Gently brush this mixture over the top of the dough to achieve a golden, glossy crust.

  8. Bake: Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown on top and it sounds hollow when tapped.

  9. Cool: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • Ensure that the milk is warm (not hot) to properly activate the yeast without killing it.
  • Kneading the dough adequately is crucial for achieving the desired fluffy texture.
  • An egg wash before baking gives the bread a beautiful golden crust.
  • If the dough is too sticky during kneading, add a little extra flour, one tablespoon at a time, until it becomes manageable.
