Ingredients
Scale
4 cups potatoes, thinly sliced (Russet or Yukon Gold)
2 cups cooked ham, diced
1 small onion, finely chopped
3 tbsp butter
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups milk
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
½ tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
Instructions
Preheat the Oven – Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish.
Slice the Potatoes – Thinly slice potatoes for even cooking.
Make the Creamy Sauce – In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute. Slowly add milk, whisking until thickened. Stir in cheese until smooth. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
Layer the Ingredients – In the greased baking dish, layer half the potatoes, followed by ham and onions. Pour half the sauce over the top. Repeat with remaining potatoes, ham, and sauce.
Bake – Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 15-20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
Rest and Serve – Let the dish sit for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
For extra creaminess, add a splash of heavy cream to the sauce.
If using pre-cooked potatoes, reduce baking time by 15 minutes.
Try Gruyère or Swiss cheese for a different flavor twist.
