Ingredients

Scale
  • Meat Sauce:
    • 1 lb ground beef
    • ½ lb Italian sausage, casing removed
    • 1 small onion, finely chopped
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
    • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
    • 2 tbsp tomato paste
    • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
    • ¼ cup fresh basil, chopped (or 1 tsp dried basil)
    • 1 tsp salt
    • ½ tsp black pepper
    • ½ tsp sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • Cheese Mixture:

    • 1 (15 oz) container ricotta cheese
    • 1 large egg
    • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
    • ½ tsp salt
    • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • Other Layers:

    • 12 lasagna noodles, cooked according to package instructions
    • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
    • ½ cup additional grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Meat Sauce

  1. In a large pan over medium heat, cook ground beef and Italian sausage until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Add onion and garlic, cooking until softened (about 3 minutes).
  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar (if using).
  4. Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, to develop deep flavors.

Step 2: Cook the Noodles

  1. Boil lasagna noodles according to package directions.
  2. Drain and lay them flat on parchment paper to prevent sticking.

Step 3: Prepare the Ricotta Mixture

  1. In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese, egg, Parmesan, salt, and pepper until well combined.

Step 4: Assemble the Lasagna

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a 9×13-inch baking dish, spread 1 cup of meat sauce on the bottom.
  3. Layer 3 noodles on top. Spread ⅓ of the ricotta mixture, followed by ¼ of the mozzarella cheese and another 1 cup of meat sauce.
  4. Repeat layers twice, finishing with noodles, sauce, and the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.

Step 5: Bake the Lasagna

  1. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  2. Remove foil and bake another 15 minutes, until cheese is bubbly and golden.
  3. Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • Letting the lasagna rest before cutting helps keep the layers intact.
  • For extra flavor, simmer the sauce for an hour.
  • Use oven-ready noodles to skip boiling!
