Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 2 jalapeños, finely chopped (remove seeds for less heat)
  • 1/2 cup bourbon
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Sauté the Jalapeños and Garlic
    • Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped jalapeños and garlic, sautéing until fragrant (about 2 minutes).
  2. Add the Blueberries
    • Stir in the blueberries and let them cook down, stirring occasionally, until they start to burst and release their juices (about 5 minutes).
  3. Pour in the Bourbon
    • Carefully add the bourbon to the pan, stirring to combine. Simmer for 1-2 minutes to allow the alcohol to cook off.
  4. Add the BBQ Sauce Base
    • Stir in the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, honey, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well and let the sauce simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens.
  5. Blend Until Smooth
    • If you prefer a smooth sauce, use an immersion blender to puree the mixture. Alternatively, transfer it to a blender and blend until smooth.
  6. Cool & Store
    • Let the sauce cool before transferring it to a jar. It will continue to thicken as it sits.

Notes

  • For a spicier sauce, leave the seeds in the jalapeños or add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • For a chunkier texture, mash the blueberries instead of blending the sauce.
  • This sauce pairs well with grilled meats, sandwiches, and even roasted vegetables.
