Sloppy Joes are the ultimate comfort food—savory, tangy, slightly smoky, and perfectly saucy. Ready in just 30 minutes, this family-friendly recipe brings back memories of school lunches and weeknight dinners with a messy, but delicious twist.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef and Onion: In a large skillet, heat over medium heat. Add ground beef and chopped onion, breaking up the meat as it cooks. Sauté until the beef is browned and the onions are soft, about 7–10 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
  2. Stir in Garlic and Tomato Paste: Add minced garlic and tomato paste to the skillet, cooking for 1–2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Add Sauce Ingredients: Stir in ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and apple cider vinegar. Let simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  4. Toast the Buns: While the mixture simmers, toast the hamburger buns (optional but recommended).
  5. Assemble and Serve: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto each bun and serve hot.

Notes

  • Toasting the buns helps them hold up better to the sauce.
  • If the mixture gets too thick, add a splash of water to loosen it up.
  • Add a dash of hot sauce for a spicy kick if desired.
