This homemade sesame chicken is crispy, sticky, and perfectly balanced between sweet and savory. It’s a simple yet impressive dish that brings the flavors of your favorite takeout right to your kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/4 cup honey or brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (slurry)
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
  • 2 green onions, sliced

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine chicken pieces with soy sauce and minced garlic. Let marinate for 10 minutes.
  2. Coat the marinated chicken pieces evenly with cornstarch.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Fry the chicken in batches until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
  4. In a saucepan, combine honey (or brown sugar), sesame oil, rice vinegar, and a splash of soy sauce. Bring to a simmer.
  5. Add the cornstarch slurry to the sauce, stirring until it thickens to a glossy consistency.
  6. Toss the fried chicken pieces in the sauce until well coated.
  7. Garnish with toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions before serving.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, consider double-frying the chicken pieces.
  • Adjust the sweetness by varying the amount of honey or sugar to taste.
  • For a spicier kick, add a teaspoon of chili garlic sauce or red pepper flakes to the sauce.
