Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup melted butter (for brushing)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp dried parsley

Instructions

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, until frothy.

Step 2: Mix the Dough

In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter, mixing until a soft dough forms. If too sticky, add flour a tablespoon at a time.

Step 3: Knead and Let the Dough Rise

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise for 1 to 1 1/2 hours until doubled.

Step 4: Shape the Dough

Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 portions. Roll each portion into a 6-inch strip and place on a greased baking sheet.

Step 5: Bake the Breadsticks

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 6: Brush with Garlic Butter

Melt remaining butter and mix with garlic powder and parsley. Brush the baked breadsticks generously with the garlic butter.

Notes

  • Ensure the water is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast. The ideal temperature is around 110°F (43°C).
  • Let the dough rise in a warm environment to ensure proper proofing. If necessary, use your oven (preheat to 200°F/93°C, then turn off) to create a warm space.
  • For extra flavor, you can mix in more herbs with the garlic butter, such as oregano or basil.
