These juicy chopped steaks are a comforting, old-fashioned meal made with seasoned ground beef patties, pan-seared to perfection, and smothered in a rich onion and mushroom gravy. A hearty dish perfect for serving with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles!

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Patties:
  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef (80/20)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp oil (for searing)
  • For the Gravy:
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp flour (or cornstarch for GF option)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Mix and Shape the Patties – In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently and shape into oval patties.
  2. Sear the Patties – Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. Sauté the Onions and Mushrooms – In the same pan, melt butter and sauté onions and mushrooms until softened and golden.
  4. Make the Gravy – Sprinkle flour over the onions and mushrooms, stirring well. Slowly pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly until smooth. Simmer until thickened.
  5. Return the Patties – Place the seared patties back in the pan, spooning gravy over them. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes until fully cooked.
  6. Serve – Plate the chopped steaks with plenty of gravy and enjoy with mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the beef to keep the patties tender.
  • Use fresh mushrooms for the best flavor.
  • Let the steaks rest in the gravy to soak up more flavor.
