Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 cup milk (or plant-based alternative)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (or coconut oil for dairy-free)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Red food coloring (as needed)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional, for enhanced flavor)
  • Oil for frying

Cinnamon Sugar Coating:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Cream Cheese Dip:

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Dough

  1. In a saucepan, heat milk, butter, sugar, and a few drops of red food coloring over medium heat. Stir until the butter melts and the mixture begins to simmer.
  2. Remove from heat and quickly stir in the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Mix vigorously until a thick dough forms. Let it cool slightly.
  3. Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a star tip.

Step 2: Fry the Churros

  1. Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Pipe the dough directly into the oil, cutting into desired lengths with scissors.
  3. Fry for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally, until crispy and deep red. Remove and drain on a paper towel.

Step 3: Coat in Cinnamon Sugar

  1. While still warm, roll the churros in a cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat evenly.

Step 4: Make the Cream Cheese Dip

  1. In a bowl, whisk together cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

  1. Serve warm with the cream cheese dip and enjoy!

Notes

  • If the dough is too thick to pipe, knead slightly before transferring to the piping bag.
  • For baked churros, pipe onto a parchment-lined sheet and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15-18 minutes.
  • Adjust food coloring to your desired shade of red.
