Ingredients
UnitsScale
2 large sweet or yellow onions, cut into 1/4-inch thick rings
1cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1cup cold milk
1 large egg
Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
Prepare the Onions: Separate the onion rings and set aside.
Make the Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. In another bowl, beat the egg and cold milk until well combined. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until smooth.
Heat the Oil: Pour vegetable oil into a deep fryer or large pot to a depth of about 2 inches. Heat the oil to 375°F (190°C).
Coat the Onion Rings: Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it’s fully coated.
Fry: Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
Drain: Remove the onion rings and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Serve: Enjoy immediately while hot, optionally with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
Oil Temperature: Maintaining the oil temperature is crucial for achieving a crispy texture. Use a thermometer to ensure the oil stays at 375°F (190°C).
Onion Selection: Sweet or yellow onions are ideal for their mild flavor and tenderness.
Batter Consistency: The batter should be similar to pancake batter—thick enough to coat the onions but not too heavy. Adjust with more milk if necessary.
