Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (lean for richness)
  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 jalapeños, chopped (adjust heat to preference)
  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef: In a large pot, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Once fully cooked, drain excess fat if necessary.
  2. Add the Aromatics: Stir in the chopped onion and garlic. Sauté until soft and fragrant, about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Toast the Spices: Add chili powder, smoked paprika, and chopped jalapeños to the pot. Stir and let the spices toast for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Simmer the Chili: Pour in the black beans, crushed tomatoes, and beef broth. Stir everything together, bring to a simmer, and cook for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Adjust Seasoning: Taste and adjust seasoning with salt, pepper, or chili powder to your preference.
  6. Serve and Enjoy: Ladle into bowls and top with shredded cheese, sour cream, fresh cilantro, or any other toppings of choice.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef, but not too lean, to keep the chili rich and flavorful.
  • For a thicker chili, mash some of the black beans or simmer uncovered for a longer time.
  • Add more jalapeños or cayenne pepper for extra heat.
