Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for icing, optional)
  • 23 tablespoons milk (for icing, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cinnamon.
  3. Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Make a well in the center and add buttermilk. Stir gently until combined, then fold in raisins.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, knead gently 3-4 times, and roll out to 1/2-inch thickness.
  6. Cut out biscuits with a round cutter and place them on the baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown.
  8. (Optional) Whisk powdered sugar and milk to make icing, then drizzle over warm biscuits.

Notes

  • Cold butter is key for flaky biscuits.
  • Don’t overmix the dough to ensure a tender texture.
  • For a sweeter biscuit, sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the tops before baking.
